VOTF REQUEST FOR CARDINAL OUELLET ON HIS NEW APPOINTMENT

July 1, 2010-Boston – Voice of the Faithful commends the appointment of Cardinal Marc Ouellet as the Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. In his new position, Cardinal Ouellet will lead the committee making recommendations to the Pope on which priests should be elevated to the rank of bishop, a process in which Voice of the Faithful believes the laity should be involved.

“We encourage the new leader to turn a new page at time in the Church that demands new insights and new leadership,” says Dr. Nick Mazza, VOTF National Secretary and leader of the Universal Church Reform team that worked on recommendations for changes in the selection of bishops. “We ask Cardinal Ouellet to read our recommendations and accept a new way to involve the laity in participating in the affairs of the Church some 50 years after the Second Vatican Council called for greater involvement for the people of God in the Catholic Church.”

Voice of the Faithful’s proposal would restore to the bishop selection process many of the lay involvement practices followed throughout the first and well into the second millennium, while recognizing the authority of the Pope to make the final appointment of a bishop.
