Just two days after news hit that Fr. Alberto Cutie was acting scandalously with a woman, he was relieved of his duties at St. Francis de Sales Parish in Miami. The controversial story of the popular priest some called “Padre Oprah” has prompted another debate on mandated celibacy.

But the quick action of the Archdiocese of Miami stands in stark contrast to the actions of many dioceses who handle the numerous allegations of clergy sexual abuse. For example, it was just this month that actions were taken against Fr. Robert Osborne, the former President of Vianney High School in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, although allegations were made in 2006 against Fr. Osborne and the case was settled out of court. The Archdiocese now says Osborne can no longer lead public mass or live at a rectory.
